At the University of Miami School of Architecture, faculty members like Germane Barnes are working across disciplines to find the answers to our common questions. Barnes first arrived in South Florida after being invited to play a pivotal role in the revitalization of the Opa-Locka neighborhood in Miami-Dade County.
In his work at the University of Miami, he is bringing together fields like design, history, sociology, and economics to understand space in different communities. He recently received a grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in Fine Arts to study the role of the porch in African-American homes.
Now, Barnes is traveling to cities across the country to examine how architecture and design can revitalize neighborhoods, fill crucial gaps, and serve as community hubs.
