Frost Institute Frost Institute

To enhance its potential as a world leader in research, the University will make strategic investments in fundamental science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through a coordinated set of interdisciplinary, University-wide institutes. This unparalleled effort will elevate the basic and applied sciences, and engineering by establishing a series of prominent institutes.

Frost Institutes

The Frost Institutes for Science and Engineering will catalyze teamwork across departments, labs, and clinics, and position us at the forefront of the next wave of scientific revolution. Established in the spring of 2017 as a result of a transformative $100 million gift from Phillip and Patricia Frost, the Frost Institute of Chemistry and Molecular Science (FICMS) is the first one within a group of synergistic research institutes to be coordinated under the umbrella of the Frost Institutes for Science and Engineering. FICMS will bring together scientists from several molecular-based disciplines to do collaborative research work, using approaches relying on molecular design, discovery, and development that will be translated into solutions to significant real-life problems.

Institute of Data Science and Computing

As a member of the University of Miami’s Frost Institutes of Science and Engineering, the Institute of Data Science and Computing supports basic and applied research initiatives throughout the University of Miami as well as other leading institutions around the world. IDSC is committed to developing strong partnerships with industry, government, and nonprofit institutions in south Florida, while building bridges to the Caribbean, Latin America, and beyond. IDSC’s goal is to catalyze data-intensive research in fields ranging from medicine to earth sciences, urban planning, digital humanities, and business. IDSC also strives to enhance Data Science understanding among UM’s students and the public—helping individuals of all ages including underrepresented minorities—develop the STEM skills needed for professional success in the 21st century.

Institute of Mathematical Sciences of the Americas

The Institute of the Mathematical Sciences of the Americas, a hemispheric center in mathematics and its applications at the University of Miami, is funded through a five-year award from the Simons Foundation along with funding from the Office of the Provost and contributions from the College of Arts and Sciences. The mission of IMSA is threefold:

  • To foster and facilitate research in mathematics and its applications across the Americas;
  • To disseminate advances from this research broadly and interactively to the global mathematical and scientific communities; and
  • To build national and international capacity in the mathematical science workforce by providing targeted educational opportunities at key points in human intellectual development from middle school through postdoctoral training.

XR initiative

In response to the emerging fields of spatial computing and immersive environments, the University of Miami in collaborations with industry partners and academia, has committed significant resources to develop innovative research and applications in virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality. The XR Initiative is founded on the premise that immersive environments will be the next pervasive platform for communication, education, healthcare, and work, eventually evolving into non-intrusive interfaces and seamlessly blending the real world with digital information. The XR Initiative serves as an interdisciplinary community of faculty, researchers, students, and staff who have a common interest in using XR technologies to pursue solutions in their field.
